Chinese passengers. Men –
women and children – the
men wearing long brocaded
silk robes. There are some
in the stateroom next to us –
we were docked eight miles above???
the city in the river – and the
launch we boarded to go ashore
took us down to the city each time.
the river is full of boats as we
go down – Ocean liners – small
craft and Chinese junks
propelled by hand –
There are also some war ships
anchored offshore.
It is said the commerce of this
city serves 200 million people.
About 3 1/2 hours after sailing
we stopped for 6 or 7 hours
to wait for the tide before
proceeding – Very cold –
some snow flakes falling
and a gray day –
Most of the new passengers
are leaving us at Hong Kong.
