So many desperately poor –
Many, very many “rickshaw”
men so poor and some of
them bare footed running
with their passengers – barefooted
on the muddy slippery
pavement – pitiful objects
some of them.
We saw a few privately owned
rickshaws that were very
nice – so many ladies alone
use them – The motor cars
are not nearly so numerous
as in America – The wonder
is how they and the “rickshaws”
can use the streets to-gether
as they do –
Many of the streets are narrow
as are the side walks
and the natives do not try
to turn out??? for you on the
side walks – they wak
along like so many blocks
of wood.
The wharfs are very large
