Monday. Jan 21″ Shanghai.
Very early the seamer neared
our destination Shanghai –
Steamers and fishing boats
become more + more numerous –
We slowed down as we entered
the river Wyanzepao[1]
up which we ascended 12 miles
to the great city –
With much delay we entered
the fine launch of the $.Co.
and were taken ashore –
In 25 minutes we arrived,
took “rickshaws” to the Astor
Hotel where we were assigned
rooms. The lobby of the hotel is
immense – Elaborate and so
warm + comfy – but the rooms
cold and cheerless as Greenland

We registered and later had
lunch in a beautiful dining-
room – The table-de-hote
luncheon was fine as was
the music – We were a party

[1] –  “Wyanzepao” appears to be Annis’s phonetic spelling of the Whangpoo River, a common early 20th-century English name for today’s Huangpu River in Shanghai. River
