Monday. Jan 21″ Shanghai.
Very early the seamer neared
our destination Shanghai –
Steamers and fishing boats
become more + more numerous –
We slowed down as we entered
the river Wyangpoo??? River
up which we ascended 12 miles
to the great city –
With much delay we entered
the fine ??? of the $.Co.
and were taken ashore –
In 25 minutes we arrived,
took “rickshaws” to the Astor
Hotel where we were assigned
rooms. The lobby of the hotel is
immense – Elaborate and so
warm + comfy – but the rooms
cold and chu???less as Grunland???
We registered and later had
lunch in a beautiful dining-
room – The table-de-hote
luncheon was fine as was
the music – We were a party
(suggest a change)

I believe that Annis was trying to phonetically spell the river name “Whangpoo”, which was the romanized version of the river known as Huangpu. This river runs directly next to the Astor House Hotel in Shanghai (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Astor+House+Hotel/@31.2473716,121.4587674,12.25z/data=!4m8!3m7!1s0x35b270547bc22723:0x75c4b6c38a4dce06!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d31.2441132!4d121.490811)
With much delay we entered
the fine “canals”
cold and “cheerless” as “Greenland”
