The grade was steep and our
progress slow but steady;
up and up constantly, past
the immense fields of ashes –
and the cvases that held
snow to the upper station.

clouds.
Leaving the car we walked
slowly over the road bed of ashes
up the incline to the ledge of
the crater. It was bitter cold
and a piercing wind was blowing
cutting our faces in the blast???
We looked into the huge jagged
edged crater from which
was issuing a vast cloud
of sulfuricĀ gas – from the
top of the cone inside the
crater – when suddenly there
