SS Malolo

scanned original

The SS Malolo was a passenger liner built in 1926 by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia for the Matson Line. Designed by naval architect William Francis Gibbs, she was the largest and most luxurious American passenger ship of her era. The Malolo was intended for first-class luxury service between San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu, featuring spacious cabins, swimming pools, a gymnasium, and a high standard of service.

In 1937, the ship underwent a major refit and was renamed Matsonia. Later, she served as a troopship during World War II. Post-war, she was sold and renamed Atlantic, and eventually Queen Frederica under Greek ownership. After 50 years of service, she was scrapped in 1977.

Here’s a video about it!
