quarter look much as those
in Shanghai Old City. Only
not so crooked.
We noticed where buildings were
being repaired the scaffolding
was built from bamboo tied together –
but there was no floor on which
to stand – they have to climb
around on those slender bamboo
sticks – even high up the
side of a tall building.
All day our steamer has had
Chinese junks packed as close
together as possible at the
dock nearest the steamer –
Families live their lives in these
dirty flat boats – a small section
of which is covered over and used
as a home – they beg constantly
from any passengers they
see on deck.
Many of these boats have sails
large ones – and some of the
sails are so dirty and tattered.
