They were very beautiful +
expensive –
Just before the train left
a man passed middle age –
tall + dark rushed into
the compartment next to ours
(There were two compartments
often to-gether in the French
car) and sat down. He had a
haunted look – was very
nervous and over wrought???
He could not sit still nd
in a few moments began to
search his jackets excitedly –
At first he could not find
what he wanted – but finally
located his bill fold and
counted his bills feverishly
first from one side and
then from the other – then
taking out a purse counted
the change in that. He was
evidently a losing gambler
